FYI– Here’s an excerpt from an email one of last years winners sent to Waldo. Class & Quality!

Hi Mr. King!

So great to hear from you! That’s amazing that you’ll be presenting about the Hmong and our contribution to the war. It really means a lot to me! Unfortunately, I will be in Laos for a medical mission trip that I believe I notified you and Mr. Wilson about when we met earlier last Spring.

I was very fortunate to be a recipient of this year’s Frances L. Phillips Travel Scholarship at UNC, with a $9,000 grant to conduct social research on the effects of Agent Orange used during the Vietnam War. I will also be holding workshops on personal hygiene and bringing basic medical necessities with me (toothbrush, bandaid, toothpaste, etc). I will also visit the Plain of Jars, Long Cheng (Lima Site 98) where General Vang Pao and CIA operatives worked during the war. I really look forward to it! I will be leaving on May 21st and will unfortunately be unavailable during your presentation. Let me know if you need anything, however, and I will do my best to help!

I also wanted to share with you that I was a recent recipient of the MLK Scholarship at UNC, a Chancellor’s Earnest L. Mackie Award Recipient at UNC, and plan to graduate early to pursue a Master’s in Physiology before I go to medical school.

Best Regards,
xxx

 Dearest Ravens,
Thank you so much for your generous scholarship. It has helped me reach the point of nearly paying off this semester in cash and avoiding substantial debt, which is something my grandparents have taught me. When they came to America, they worked to pay off everything they owned and stay out of debt, and that is my goal as well.
They are very excited that their granddaughter gets to go to college and they tell all of their friends in the Laotian community in Twin Falls about it. My grandfather is deeply grateful for the Ravens in helping our family and was very intrigued as he learned more about the organization, as he worked with the Royal Laotian Government at the time and was very familiar with the planes. Words cannot express the appreciation we have for the help you have given our family and for risking your lives for our people in Laos during the war.
Thanks again,
Sounally Chanthaminavong
